Founded in 1999, NVISION Newport Beach (formerly TLC Newport Beach) is led by Tom Tooma, M.D., the founder and medical director of NVISION Laser Eye Centers. He has performed more than 100,000 LASIK procedures.
NVISION Newport Beach is the flagship location for all of the NVISION Laser Eye Centers and boasts the largest facility with the most laser equipment. Its open-access policy allows outside ophthalmologists to perform surgeries in its surgery center. Meet the Staff
Dr. Tom Tooma
Dr. Tooma has performed more than 100,000 LASIK procedures and believes that laser vision correction at NVISION is as safe as it can be. In fact, he has performed LASIK surgery on hundreds of doctors, including 250 eye doctors. He believes that the combination of experience and technology gives NVISION patients the highest possible likelihood of achieving 20/20 or better vision through LASIK procedures.
Dr. Franklin Lusby
Dr. Lusby began specializing in ophthalmology in 1980. In 1989, Dr. Lusby chose to focus his practice on refractive surgeries and is a LASIK specialist, performing more than 150 procedures a month. He continues to perform PRK surgeries as well as LASIK, Custom LASIK, Intralase®, and more.
Julie Chen, O.D.
Dr. Chen received her D.O. degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her BS in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego. She has participated in several clinical studies and is currently a sub-clinical investigator of an FDA clinical trial to reduce or even eliminate the need for reading glasses. She has more than 10 years of experience and has been with NVISION Newport Beach since 2006.
Dan Carver, O.D.
As the Regional Optometric Liaison, Dr. Carver is responsible for communications between NVISION and its extensive optometric affiliate network. Additionally, he is involved in patient care
Dr. George Baerveldt
Dr. Baerveldt’s international reputation is based on his glaucoma research and surgical innovations. Dr. Baerveldt developed the Baerveldt™ Glaucoma Implant and presently holds six patents related to this invention. He also invented Trabectome®, a minimally-invasive glaucoma surgical instrument for the treatment of adult and infantile open-angle glaucoma which is performed worldwide. In 2012, the American Glaucoma Society awarded Dr. Baerveldt with the Innovator Award for these surgical contributions.
Amy Vu, O.D.
Dr. Vu received her O.D. degree from Nova Southeastern University and completed her BS in Biology at the University of California, Irvine. She is a member of the American Optometric Association. She speaks conversational Vietnamese and Spanish.
Matthew Brown, O.D.
Dr. Matthew Brown provides consultations for refractive eye surgery patients and second opinions for referring optometrists. He has provided comprehensive eye exams on more than 50,000 LASIK patients and has participated in FDA approval studies for several excimer lasers.
