More About Angelique J. Pillar, M.D.
Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Pillar is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed her Ophthalmology training at the University of Maryland in Baltimore where she was selected as Chief Resident and Outstanding Resident in Ophthalmology. She completed a prestigious fellowship in leading edge corneal and refractive surgery at the world famous Cleveland Clinic. She then returned to Baltimore as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. Dr. Pillar also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from Yale University. Before attending Yale, she graduated #1 in her class and Valedictorian of her high school.
Dr. Pillar has performed thousands of cataract, cornea, and laser vision correction procedures, and has special expertise in the newest technological advances. This enables her to offer her patients state-of-the-art care including laser-assisted cataract surgery with intraocular lens implants that provide the greatest possible freedom from the need for glasses, LASIK and PRK laser vision correction that is the safest, most precise, and most effective available, and implantable contact lens surgery (Visian ICL) for highly nearsighted patients.
Dr. Pillar is an expert in complex cataract and cornea surgery that most ophthalmologists are not trained to perform. She regularly receives referrals from other ophthalmologists for help with patients facing unusually difficult eye problems. She is one of the very few surgeons in Southern California performing intraocular lens implant exchanges with novel implant fixation techniques, corneal transplants, and other advanced corneal procedures known as DALK, DSEK, DMEK, INTACS, Crosslinking, and K-PRO.
Beyond her unique surgical skills, what sets Dr. Pillar apart is her award-winning teaching ability. She takes great pride in listening to her patients carefully and educating them thoroughly about their eye problems and treatment choices – a perfect fit with this practice’s longstanding “One-to-One” philosophy of highly personalized and compassionate care.
Dr. Pillar says, “I really enjoy ophthalmology because it is so satisfying to provide medical and surgical treatments and technology that have a direct benefit on patient’s quality of life.”
