More About Rose Cunningham-Ahumada, D.O.
Dr. Cunningham-Ahumada is a Santa Ana-based eye doctor, experienced in a wide range of ophthalmic procedures with an emphasis on cataract surgery. Working as a member of the Eye Associates of Orange County team, she is also on the medical staff of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, South Coast Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, and Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. In 2005 Dr. Cunningham-Ahumada completed her ophthalmology residency training in Detroit, Michigan through the Statewide Campus System of Michigan State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine. During her final year of residency, she served as Chief Resident and was awarded the Patrick Murray Award for excellent performance on the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program examination.
Dr. Cunningham-Ahumada is a Clinical Preceptor at Western University of Health Sciences and served as an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, training 3rd and 4th year medical students in ophthalmology. She is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Osteopathic Association. Dr. Cunningham-Ahumada served on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners as National Faculty in the Clinical Department of Surgical Subspecialties, as a Subject Matter Expert in ophthalmology, and as a test question Item Writer for the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination, Level 3.
Dr. Cunningham-Ahumada was born and raised in Santa Ana, graduating from Foothill High School in 1992. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996 from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, where she was a double major in Biology and History and completed her pre-medical studies. She studied medicine at Western University of Health Sciences – College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona and earned the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2001. She completed her traditional rotating internship through Western University of Health Sciences at Downey Regional Medical Center in Downey in 2002 before moving to Michigan for her residency training program.
Dr. Cunningham-Ahumada and her husband have two sons and two dogs. She volunteers for the Orange County Council Boy Scouts of America in her free time and was conferred the BSA District Award of Merit in recognition for her service. She enjoys the outdoors with her family and has undergone the rigorous training required for certification as a Wilderness First Responder. She also enjoys fruit and vegetable gardening at her home and reading for pleasure. Dr. Cunningham- Ahumada is bilingual in English and Spanish.
